What is it like in July?

In general it is nice all year round, with the average temperatures between 74-84F. The thermometer rarely dips below 70F. It does get hot around here (isn't that why you come here?) and the hottest months are July and August. The rainiest months are September and October, but the rain usually falls for an hour or so in the afternoon or at night which is no big deal. Unless your visit is during a hurricane, you are unlikely to have rain for more than 3 days during your vacation. You can visit Weather Base to see average temperatures and rainfall year round.

What to wear (or not wear)?

The dress code along Mexico's Caribbean coast is casual. You can go into most places in a T-shirt and shorts and nobody would look at you funny. However, if you want to dress nicely there are places to go where you won't look out of place. Remember it can get pretty hot here. Men should leave their suits at home, slacks and a golf shirt are about as nice as it gets here. For women, during the summer synthetics are too hot so bring cotton.

A lot of people wonder about topless sunbathing in Mexico (both how to avoid it and how to find it). The concentration of topless sunbathers gets greater as you head south from Cancun to Tulum. You will find topless bathing on almost every beach on to coast, but it is more common in Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Akumal and Cancun have more American tourists than Europeans so you will find fewer topless beach goers. Even on the beaches were it is popular, usually fewer than 30% of the women participate so you can sit far away or ignore them if they bother you. Of course it is always inappropriate to go topless in the shops and restaurants. In the towns South of Cancun you can generally wear your bathing suit to places along the beach, although it would be considered very rude to wear your bathing suit in any town that is not full of tourists on the beach.
