Aventuras
Akumal - diving central
Villas DeRosa is a family run hotel ($55) with 1-3 bedroom rental condos
($100-$200) that have kitchens. They also run the Aquatech Dive Center
which offers dive trips to reefs less than a 15 minute boat ride. They
also specialize in cave, cavern and technical dive training.
South of Akumal
The brand new Bahia Principe all inclusive hotel is just after Aventuras
Akumal. Further South along the highway is Aktun Chen, a dry cave you
can tour. On the left (beach side) is DIF a government run camp. You can
fish on the narrow beach here.
Most of the beaches between Akumal and Tankah have recently been closed
to the public because they are being developed by private corporations.
The first of these is Chemuyil. On the right there is a Y shaped entrance
into Chemuyil Pueblo. It has a few small mini-supers and Pizza Leo's serves
passable pizzas and wonderful salads and garlic bread. Xcacel is the next
closed beach. It is being turned into a hotel by Sol Melída. It
used to be a wonderful place to boogie board and the main turtle nesting
beach, but now the entrance is closed and guarded.
